When the Olympic flame lit up Bath

Yesterday was not a ride day, or a race day. Due to more important engagements none of us put any miles in on our bikes. However, it was the day that the Olympic torch arrived in Bath & then travelled on to Bristol. I was in Bath so a couple of us took a ride to town to see what all the fuss was about.

The fuss was all about the individuals who were chosen to carry the flame, each for 300 metres before passing it into the next lucky runner. The city of Bath was out in it’s masses & everyone took advantage of the sun to watch this once in a lifetime opportunity. Once the main procession had passed, we, along with a whole load more cyclists tagged on the back & followed for a while across town.

This was quite a surreal moment & although the real show was over the crowd continued to snap away at the renegade cyclists enjoying the ride.

We watched the flame go by one more time near the Royal Crescent where it had to make it’s way through a ridiculous amount of onlookers. I’d say thousands were there, but I wasn’t counting, I just knew it was near impossible to move for people. Post-procession we spent some quality time enjoying the sun. A perfect combination of bikes, sun & good friends.

This guy took the time to don his best outfit for the occasion, and proceeded to pose for photos next to his less than special bike.
