My 2 points

Last Thursday myself & Adam were the only 2 of the BSCC gang stupid enough to brave the wind & the rain up at Castle Combe for the second in the summer circuit series. I thought I’d ridden in bad conditions before but this was something else. The wind was unbearable.

The race is for cat 3 & 4 riders, my first as a cat 3 & our first race with cat 3 riders this year. The bunch split early on, the pace was pretty fast & the crosswinds even faster. The front pack got smaller & smaller over the first half of the race.

The conditions got the better of Adam & he was back with the second group, I hung on the the back of the lead group, literally hung on with everything I had. A 3 man break left us in their dust (water) & about 12 of us raced the remainder of the 17 lap race together, battling with the elements.

The bell went for the last lap & to my surprise I was still in contention. Sprint finish time & I fought the finish line headwind, coming 5th in the bunch sprint so 8th in the race. Another couple of points in the bag for me. Fingers crossed the sun shines for our next race.

My first race (of the year)

Wednesday evening saw the first of many Bristol South midweek time trials. It was to be my first TT of the year, I was reluctant as to whether I was going to race or not, but as the opener is only a 5.2 mile out & back I couldn’t not do. I opted for racing on the geared road bike, rather than the fixed gear TT build I rode last year. This was firstly because I had a 20 mile ride planned before the race, and secondly because I hadn’t bothered to get a bike together.

I had no idea whether the gears (without TT extensions) would make me faster than last year or not. I dug out my time from last year & was aiming for a PB. When we arrived at the meet point it was apparent it would be a hard night for everyone as the headwind on the way out was next level, and average speeds on the way back were 3-4mph faster. Mad on such a flat course. My time came along, I battled the wind on the way out with my average speed being less than 20mph, I was not happy with this so knew I needed to up that drastically on the way back. Luckily that crazy headwind was now a major tailwind giving everyone a physical & mental boost on the way back. I spent most of the time in My biggest gear & out of the saddle, I felt super human for those 7 minutes. I chased down our good friend Adam who set off a minute before me on his first ever TT, and I managed to catch him literally just before the finish line.

I put in a time of 14:20, not a PB but decent in the conditions. Ed bagged himself a 12:28 in his new red garms. A big shout out goes to Adam, Dan, Cuff & Hana who were all riding their first ever TT is the least favourable conditions. Here’s to many sunny races this summer!

A #chipshopride video

Every Thursday at 7pm in Bristol is a little something called the Chip Shop Ride. People meet up, ride a few miles in the city, ending up at a chip shop where greasy food is consumed. I try & get along to these as often as possible, and last time the GoPro was out, so I put together a super short video.

Ready Steady Cog – Pancake Day

Here at Hamilton Wheelers we like nothing more than food after a bike ride. Yesterday Instagram was full of pictures of pancakes, so we thought we’d follow the tradition & have a go at making our own, using our minimal knowledge & cooking apparatus. We show you how it’s done below:

20130213-120451.jpg

You will need:
-Wholemeal flour (because Tim bought the wrong stuff)
-Soya milk (because it’s all we have in the fridge)
-A lemon
-A bag of sugar
-Some eggs
-Some bike scales (it was them or the bathroom ones)
-A measuring device (aka a bike bottle)
-A wok (because we don’t own a frying pan)
-Some chocolate ice-cream

20130213-111814.jpg

Technique:
-Measure about 300ml milk
-Crack 2 eggs
-Don’t sieve the flour
-Get the heat cranked up

20130213-111954.jpg

-Weigh 100g flour (the only way we know how)

20130213-112049.jpg

-Pour all of the goods into a jug
-Fork it up

20130213-112132.jpg

-Pour some mix into the wok
-Discuss whether you have actually done this right, used the right kind of flour & whether soya milk was a big mistake
-Decide that it’s too late to change & let it cook

20130213-112324.jpg

-Give it some mad tossing skills (keep doing this until there isn’t much left of the pancake)

20130213-112411.jpg

Then you’re done! If you’re a traditionalist like Ed then you’ll go for the standard lemon & sugar spec, obviously.

20130213-112537.jpg

If you’re a food junkie like Tim then you’ll stuff it with chocolate ice-cream before coating it in lemon juice & sugar, then go for a late night bike ride after a big sugar rush.

So there you go, you’re all ready for next year’s pancake fest. Stay tuned to the blog for more pro cooking tekkers with us lot.

Take care out there

Collisions between cars & cyclists have been at the forefront of my mind this past month, so I feel it’s my turn to write my thoughts down, not in a ‘I hate all cars, get them off the road’ way, but as a person, who rides a bike & has been affected by such events recently.

It all started when I heard the tragic news of the incident in Hanham where a driver hit a young couple on a tandem & killed them both, this came as a huge shock to me & I still can’t believe this happened at all, especially so locally to us. The moment I heard the news I feared that it could have involved a friend or riding buddy of mine. To my great relief, it didn’t, but it did involve 2 defenceless humans out enjoying married life together. The thoughts of Hamilton Wheelers are with the family & friends of Ross & Clare Simons. I don’t recall hearing another story like it in recent years, and especially so local to me, on a road I have ridden down regularly.

Since this incident, 3 of my colleagues have been hit off their bikes by drivers, I only work with 10 people so this number is ridiculous. All 3 of the aforementioned are avid cyclists & all 3 were just trying to get to work on 2 wheels as they do every day. But unfortunately they all happened to be riding nearby to a driver who was not fully aware of their immediate surroundings & those who occupied it. When you are driving a ton of metal with a powerful engine inside, you have to be aware that there are others sharing the road with you who aren’t as well equipped in a high, or low speed collision. You need to keep your wits about you & use the gift of sight that you have been given, look around you, use your mirrors, slow down, and remember, cyclists have equal share of the road. They are just kind enough to allow you to overtake them & speed past them at 30mph through built up areas. This doesn’t mean you have the right to pull across junctions without taking note to see if a cyclist is approaching, and if it’s their right of way, it’s their right of way.

We live in a world where people rely on bikes to get around equally as much as others use cars, yet some drivers just can’t see this?

To all of my cycling friends – please take care out there, some people don’t understand that an impact from a big metal box at 20mph can ruin a life. Please look after yourself & invest in some good lights & some bright clothing, it helps, honestly.

To all of my driving friends – please remember that you are sharing the road, you don’t own it, and hopefully you never will. Bikes are great, for so many things, but the more incidents like this, the less likely people will ride their bikes. If this happens the roads will fill up with more cars & you’ll be even later for your meeting with an Egg McCoffee.

Life is short, so look after each other out there.

Bike are replaceable, lives aren’t.

The first Steady Sunday of 2013

This weekend we got ourselves a brand new GoPro Hero 3, so yesterday’s Steady Sunday ride was the perfect time to give it it’s first outing. We’ve put together a few clips using the awesome bit of technology. Vimeo has compressed the footage loads so watch it in HD for a better look. And don’t worry, we’ve stuck to the theme of pop soundtracks in the new year too. Below are a few stills taken with the camera too.

Welcome to 2013

The Christmas break is over & in theory you should all be back on your bike making the most of the (drier) weather. We’ve got loads of exciting things planned for 2013 & can’t wait to share them all with you.

This Sunday we’ll be back on our bikes with the first Steady Sunday ride of the year, a gentle 30 mile spin setting off from Mud Dock Deli at 10am, bring a bike (most people ride fixed) & come for a chilled out ride with a great group of people without too many hills.

My first proper ride of 2013 was a fun one with a few teething/bottle loosing/puncture issues. Here’s a few photos from along the way:
